The Players
Here's who does what.
Brad Turner plays mandolin and sings.
Brad started listening to bluegrass at a very young age.
He remembers his father would have Ray Davis and WAMU
on the big floor model stereo every evening. It was there he
heard the likes of The Seldom Scene, Hot Rize, Doyle Lawson,
and Tony Rice. His father took him to see The Seldom Scene
at Gloryland Park. "I saw John Duffey playing the mandolin
and knew it was for me." Musical influences and heroes
include, John Duffey, John Starling, Keith Whitley, Tony Rice,
and Don Rigsby. "I've always wanted to find a band that liked
the same style of bluegrass as me, and here it is!"
Alan Rausch plays dobro and sings.
Alan was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. He started playing
ukelele before elementary school, and then he learned guitar.
In 1973, Alan began listening to bluegrass after hearing
Seldom Scene and other bands on Washington, D.C. radio
station WAMU. He played mandolin, banjo, and pedal steel
in bands throughout high school and college. Alan picked up dobro in 2002 and never looked back.
Curt Fox plays banjo and sings.
Curt is one of the area's veteran banjo players. He has long
been active in the local acoustic music scene and has performed
with several local bands from all around the region. Curt
performed at the Peninsula Bluegrass Festival in 2008 and
2009, and he has entertained audiences in many other venues
around the local area. Curt's banjo playing is heavily influenced
by the great JD Crowe, who is considered the dean of
Scruggs-style bluegrass banjo.
Lee Collins plays guitar and sings.
Singing and playing guitar have been a labor of love for
Lee for more than ten years. He has worked with many
other performers, including a southern gospel band from
2006 to present. Lee's magnificent tenor voice is smooth
and strong on any bluegrass song he sings for Flatland Drive.
R. Collins plays electric bass and sings.
R. began playing bass in 1990 while in college. He worked with
a local alt-country gospel band from 1990-1993. In 1996,
R. formed an independent alternative rock band with friends
from childhood. After a decade of writing, recording,
and performing, the band faded away. R. played bass for
a local southern gospel band from 2006-2009. His experience
in that band prepared him for his role in Flatland Drive.
